Groundhog Day 2012 – Odds are an early spring is on its way!

Legend has it that if a groundhog sees his shadow on Groundhog Day he’ll flee to his burrow, meaning six more weeks of winter, and if there is no shadow, spring is just around the corner. Though scientific studies show groundhogs are accurate only 37 per cent of the time, it’s a fun tradition and many Canadians anticipate word of the groundhog’s ‘prediction’, hoping for the good news that winter is almost over.
Two out of three of Canada’s famous groundhogs are calling for an early spring. Ontario’s Wiarton Willie and Nova Scotia’s rodent Shubenacadie Sam didn’t see their shadows when they emerged on Thursday morning. But Manitoba’s lesser known forecaster, Winnipeg Willow, is siding with Pennsylvania’s Punxsutawney Phil, who is calling for six more weeks of winter. Here’s hoping Willie and Sam are correct!
